Making Room for FUN!
In life, ministry, and leadership, it is easy to fill every available space with responsibility. There is always another need, another meeting, another person to care for. Over time, life can become so focused on what is urgent that we neglect what is life-giving. Yet Scripture presents a different rhythm—one where joy, celebration, and delight are not distractions from our calling, but essential to it.
Fun is often misunderstood as frivolous or unspiritual. For me, my children often reminded me what fun looks like. But when rightly ordered, it is a gift from God. The Bible tells us, “Every good and perfect gift is from above” (James 1:17). Laughter, recreation, shared experiences, and moments of delight are not accidental—they are part of God’s design to refresh the soul. In fact, “A cheerful heart is good medicine”(Proverbs 17:22). Fun, in its healthiest form, restores what stress and strain can quietly drain.
The Rhythm of Jesus: Rest, Relationship, and Renewal
Jesus Himself modeled a life that made room for more than just work. While deeply committed to His mission, He also stepped away from the crowds, shared meals with friends, attended celebrations, and created space for rest and connection. His first miracle took place at a wedding feast (John 2), not in a synagogue or on a platform, reminding us that joy and celebration matter in the Kingdom of God.
He invited His disciples, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest” (Mark 6:31). This was not weakness; it was wisdom. Jesus understood that sustainable ministry flows from a renewed soul. Fun, laughter, and shared joy are part of that renewal.
Why Fun Matters for Your Soul
Fun is not just about activity—it is about restoration. It reconnects us to joy, lightens emotional burdens, and strengthens relationships. For many leaders, the absence of fun is not intentional—it is gradual. Responsibilities increase, pressure builds, and joy quietly fades into the background.
But when we intentionally make room for fun:
Our soul breathes again
Our relationships deepen
Our perspective resets
Fun reminds us that we are not just servants of God, we are sons and daughters who are invited to enjoy His presence and His creation.
Making Room Requires Intention
Just like any other priority, fun must be scheduled, protected, and embraced. It will not naturally happen in a life filled with demands. Making room for fun means recognizing that joy is not optional, it is formational.
This might look like:
Setting aside time with your spouse or family that is free from ministry talk
Engaging in activities that bring you life (sports, hobbies, creativity)
Creating moments of laughter and shared experiences with others
Taking breaks that are truly restful—not just a change of work
For many leaders, this requires a mindset shift: Fun is not wasted time—it is invested strength.
A Willingness to Receive Joy
You don’t need permission to experience joy—you need a willingness to receive it. Fun requires humility. It invites us to lay down the pressure to perform and simply be present. It allows us to reconnect with the lighter, freer parts of who God created us to be.
The road of leadership is weighty, but it was never meant to be joyless. God calls us to carry responsibility, but He also invites us into abundant life (John 10:10).
A Biblical Perspective on Joyful Living
True spiritual maturity is not marked by constant seriousness, but by a deep, abiding joy rooted in God. As Nehemiah declared, “The joy of the Lord is your strength” (Nehemiah 8:10).
Making room for fun is not about escaping responsibility—it is about sustaining it. It is about living in such a way that your soul remains alive, your relationships remain vibrant, and your leadership flows from overflow rather than exhaustion.
Because in the Kingdom of God,
joy is not a distraction from your calling—it is a vital expression of it.
